AFS Mission

Adolescent Family Services (AFS) exists to address the unique concerns of teenagers and their families through individual, family, and group counseling.

 

AFS Counseling

Individual or Family Counseling
Professional counselors who specialize in adolescent and family development.  The goals of therapy include: identifying the presenting problem, providing relief through understanding, education and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and creating steps towards resolution.  ($55.00 per hour, Sliding Scale & 180 Scholarships available)

California Victim Compensation Program (VCP)
VCP is a program offering mental health services for those individuals who are victims of a crime, suffered emotional injuries as a result of witnessing a violent crime, or are directly affected by the crime.  The crime must be documented through a police report and services requested within a year of the crime.  For more questions regarding the VCP application & qualifications, please contact AFS @ 339-1616.

 

AFS Programs

Anger Management
This course teaches the skills to appropriately handle anger and examines anger-based coping skills.  It works with individuals and families to bring about change.  A parent or guardian is required to attend 3 family sessions.  Certificate granted upon completion. 

Gang Prevention & Intervention
A relational process in which teenagers in gangs, or on the edge of joining, are challenged and equipped to leave the gang lifestyle.  The course includes counseling, group presentations and awareness classes.  Our specialists are former gang members who can relate and communicate effectively with young people who are caught up in the lifestyle. Certificate granted upon completion. 
(8 weeks + assessment, 1 hour per week = $100.00) 

Substance Abuse Services
This program offers teenagers and their parents’ opportunities to work through drug and alcohol issues today so they do not become tomorrow’s problems.  Services include special presentations, awareness classes, and substance abuse counseling and support groups.  Certificate granted upon completion. 
(8 weeks + assessment, 1 hour per week = $100.00)

Why Try Program
Why Try is an evidenced-based curriculum proven to help young people overcome their challenges and improve outcomes in the areas of truancy, behavior management, decision-making and academics.  Certificate granted upon completion.

School-Based Program

Why Try Program:  Group Therapy
The Why Try Program is offered on select High School & Jr. High campuses. The curriculum is proven to help young people overcome their challenges and improve outcomes in the area of truancy, behavior management, decision-making and academics. The groups run between 12-15 weeks and are tailor made to meet the expressed needs of each campus.

This workshop explores the developmental hurdles placed before teens, discusses problematic behaviors, identifies the role of the family and defense mechanisms, and teaches steps on empowering your students towards personal responsibility.  This interactive workshop can be tailor made to meet the expressed needs of your site.
